Mrs Dunwoody shares a very special gift that the Art Department has presented to the School.
It has been a wonderful fortnight in the Secondary School, filled with rich learning opportunities and diverse experiences.
Our students undertaking a Unit 3 and 4 VCE subject recently completed the General Achievement Test (GAT), celebrating the halfway point of the paper with a well-earned barbeque for lunch! Following their first set of examinations, our Year 10 students transitioned seamlessly into Work Experience and highlights of the students’ placements have been on social media this week. It has been wonderful to share in their experiences from marketing to construction to school and healthcare placements. The week has provided them with an opportunity to gain valuable industry insights and to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.
Across the Middle School, students have been exploring new spaces, places and interests. Years 7 and 9 have spent a day in the city, visiting ancient artifacts at the NGV and completing a ‘city experience’ respectively. Meanwhile, as part of the Upskill curriculum, Year 8 students took on a speed puzzling challenge and continued to move through their technologies rotations, applying their learning in practical and creative ways. There has truly been something for everyone.
As we near the end of an unusually long semester, excitement fills the air! Not only for holidays but for the Semester Two timetable. To balance the weeks in each semester, next week, we will transition to this new timetable, which will bring new subjects and electives for many students.
Finally, we extend our very best wishes to the students and staff embarking on the European Music Tour. We hope their travels and performances are both enriching and memorable.
We hope that you enjoy this edition of CamNews, which celebrates the many achievements and highlights from the past fortnight. Happy reading!

On Wednesday 4 June, the School Captains had the pleasure of attending the Association of Anglican Girls Grammar Schools Captains Lunch with Mrs. Dunwoody at the elegant Lyceum Club. Joining us were captains from six other schools, including Korowa, Lauriston, Ivanhoe Girls’, Mentone Girls’, Firbank, and Lowther Hall.
The afternoon was a perfect mix of delicious food, speed-dating ice-breaker activities and refreshing discussions about how we as leaders can facilitate the development of healthy girls’ school environments. It was a delight being able to connect with such driven, passionate, and like-minded leaders from across the Anglican Girls’ School community and we cannot wait to implement what we’ve learnt into our leadership.

We are delighted to share the news that Iris L and Joyce Z from Year 8 have recently been awarded the Associate in Music, Australia (AmusA) Diploma for Piano by the Australian Music Examinations Board.
The AmusA is a prestigious performance-based diploma that recognises and awards exceptional musical achievement. Candidates present a recital program selected from a prescribed list of works, as well as demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the stylistic and theoretical elements of the chosen works. Iris and Joyce devoted extensive time and effort to preparing and refining their selected repertoire, deepening their musical interpretation skills, technical command and approach to artistic intent.
Iris and Joyce are to be congratulated on their high level of dedication to learning a wide range of works for this demanding performance examination. Their accomplishment reflects not only their outstanding musical capabilities but also their commitment to excellence.

The two-day World of Work experience serves as the introduction to the Camberwell Girls’ Careers program for our Year 9 students. On Tuesday 17 June, we ventured into Melbourne’s CBD to immerse ourselves in its bustling city streets.
Starting at the Library at the Dock, the day was centred around providing students with practical knowledge and experience. Topics such as securing a job, the importance of volunteering, first interview tips, building confidence in self-presentation, and navigating tricky workplace scenarios were covered.
The highlight of the day was an Amazing Race around the city. In teams of up to 10, students collaborated, strategised, and problem-solved their way through the city, earning points. This activity was designed to give students the opportunity to safely explore the CBD on foot and public transport while gaining real-life experience working in a team to achieve a specific goal. We’re looking forward to announcing our winners in the final Year 9 Year Level Assembly of the term!
Following on from this, on Tuesday 24 June, mock interviews will be held at the Brooksbank Library. We are thrilled to welcome alumni and parents to support the students in their first job interview experience. This exercise will allow students to practice interviewing with someone unfamiliar and receive feedback on their responses and overall interview presence. The Year 9s will also hear from a panel of Year 10 student experts who are already in part-time work, sharing insights into their experience of gaining part-time employment.
We are incredibly grateful for the supportive community that helps facilitate these initiatives and look forward to hearing success stories of first job offers from our Year 9 students soon.

Year 12 Legal Studies, Sienna C, Rachel T and Helen Z, recently took part in the Bond University National High School Mooting Competition, hosted by the Faculty of Law.
This long-running competition brings together students from across Australia to engage in simulated court proceedings, known as moots. Our students acted as barristers & solicitors in a fictional negligence appeal case. They analysed legal principles, crafted persuasive arguments, and responded to questions from the moot judges. The team worked hard to prepare and worked diligently throughout the whole process. Participating in this competition not only deepened their understanding of legal processes but also provided a valuable insight into the skills required for a future career in law.
A special mention to Rachel, who received an Honourable Mention for Advocacy award for her commendable oral advocacy skills during the moot.
Congratulations to these students for their dedication and outstanding representation of Camberwell Girls in this prestigious mooting competition.

Year 11 Legal Studies Students, Abbigael J and Sofia S recently had the opportunity to attend the 2025 Senior School Leaders’ Forum at Victorian Parliament House. The event, hosted by Member for Kew, Jess Wilson MP, welcomed students from local schools to discuss the key concerns and priorities of young people in our community.
Abbigail spoke passionately about the need for more avenues for youth engagement a connectedness, while Sofia highlighted the importance of improving outcomes around youth mental health. The event also included a guided tour of Parliament House, giving students a unique insight into Victoria’s democratic processes and the role of elected representatives.

On Tuesday 17 June, Year 7 had a big day out to explore how religious stories, images and ideas are expressed in Art and in sacred places. Students travelled by train into the city and spent 2 hours at the National Gallery of Victoria (International). This visit included a guided tour of art works with religious themes, presented by enthusiastic gallery guides.
Following some lunch under the magnificent ceiling of the Great Hall, our students walked to St Paul’s Cathedral, where they were welcomed by the Reverend Lydia Thangarudai. While in the Cathedral, students completed a “Cathedral Challenge” which involved locating the key features of the space. We are immensely proud of the respectful and enthusiastic way our year 7s carried themselves during this day in the city.
Please enjoy some student comments:
“I really appreciated being able to be among the Art, and learning the stories behind the Art.”
“I didn’t realise museums had so many religious objects.”
“It was amazing; all the Art work was so beautiful.
“One painting that stood out to me was called ‘Motherhood’. It had a mother and her children sitting at the table and having breakfast. It was a heart-felt and warming piece.”
“We’ve been to the Cathedral before, but it was so interesting to be able to spend time looking at things up close.”

Congratulations to the following students who were selected to GSV Representative teams to compete against AGSV on Wednesday 30 July:
HOCKEY
SOCCER
This is a significant achievement with 147 students participating in the trials process, with students selected from eighteen of the twenty-three participating GSV schools, celebrating hockey’s return to the representative program after a nine-year hiatus.
Students will participate in one further training session with their teammates before battling it out against the AGSV next term on Wednesday 30 July.
CGGS fielded a team of Year 12 students to compete in the annual GSV Senior Basketball Tournament at MSAC on Thursday 12 June.
In what was billed as an opportunity for Year 12 players to represent their schools in competitive basketball one final time before graduation, the atmosphere was one of great positivity and optimism.
The CGGS team were competitive throughout the round-robin tournament, often producing scintillating play in transition from defence and establishing scoring threats from inside the paint or the perimeter.
Juliet C produced a play for the highlight reel with a reverse lay-up whilst drawing contact and going to the charity stripe for the extra point. Ava S launched some exciting long-range shots and Atara P was the showrunner at point-guard, bringing the ball up court and coordinating traffic.
On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable gala day experience and one which CGGS will participate in again in 2026.
Conducted in Adelaide from 9-14 June, the 2025 Australian Swimming Trials were a selection meet for the Australian Dolphins Swim Team, to compete at the World Aquatics Championships (11 July – 3 August) and the World Para Swimming Championships (21-27 September) in Singapore.
Head Swimming Coach – Mr Yuriy Burunov – was on pool deck to mentor members of the CGGS Aquatics Club who were competing at this elite event.
Attention now turns to the CGGS Club Championships on 24 June and the CGGS Aquatics Training Camp on the Gold Coast during the second week of the term holidays from 14-18 July. This training intensive will be conducted at the world-class Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, location of the diving and swimming competitions for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
2025 Sport Captain Amber R has been impressive this year in her performances for CGGS Sport.
Amber has shone on the cross-country stage, by winning the Year 12 Championship race at House Cross Country Carnvial alongside being the first-place finisher for Camberwell Girls in the Senior A Division at the GSV Preliminary Carnival. She then followed on from these performances to be the second finisher for the School at the GSV Championship Carnival at Cruden Farm.
The month of May also saw Amber claim Year Level Champion status at the House Athletics Carnival as she represented Singleton House with pride.
Since arriving at CGGS in Year 7, Amber has provided an exceptional contribution to the School’s Sport program, taking to GSV competition in the following sports: AFL, athletics, basketball, cross-country, tennis, triathlon, and volleyball. This term, Amber has used her running capacity to full potential in playing on the Wing for the Senior AFL team with the side gaining great momentum as the season progressed.
Amber has recognised for many years that physical activity, participation in sporting competition and learning outcomes are inextricably linked. As a result, she has actively embraced the myriad of opportunities available to students at CGGS. From studying in Paris on a French Exchange to occupying leadership porfolios such as Public Speaking & Debating and House Tech Captain prior to the Sport Captain role, Amber has fully immersed herself in the vibrant culture at our school.
In her second year of coaching CGGS teams, 2023 graduate Clara Kim enjoyed a phenomenal career whilst a student at Camberwell Girls lining up in A standard teams in no less than eight sports. From AFL to volleyball, Clara was selected in the highest possible teams across her Secondary School career. A reflection of her standing within CGGS Sport and the School more broadly, was that she was elected to the leadership positions of House Sport Captain in Year 11 and Singleton House Captain in Year 12.
Clara credits netball as her most favoured sport to play and has coached a Senior and Intermediate Netball team in the weekly GSV competition this term.
Clara also made a significant contribution to the Music programme, utilising her 10-year cello career in the Symphony Orchestra, Russell and Senior Strings cohorts.
Currently studying a Bachelor of Commerce, the Sport Department looks forward to Clara coaching for a number of years to come, leading the next generation of students in their sporting experiences.
