JS Choral & Instrumental Concert / Carols @ Camberwell
Last Thursday was wonderful performing arts day for Junior School. In the morning, our Foundation to Year 6 students were involved in our annual end of year Choral and Instrumental Concert and in the afternoon, the Year 4-6 students attended the Carols at Camberwell event in Barbara Sutton Hall. Our Choral and Instrumental Concert was re-scheduled from last Thursday and the students were ready to perform and give their personal best. The concert was a huge success and the participation of every student in Ormiston from Foundation to Year 6 was a real highlight. I would like to thank the Music Department for organising the concert, particularly Acting Director Kate Savige, Jane Scott our Music Administrator and our Junior School Music teachers Nichole Adams, Jessica Huggett and Penny Byrne. It was also great to see Santa at the end of the concert where he was able to say Hello and Merry Christmas to all the Ormiston students and families.
Year 6 Graduation Ceremony and Supper
It was an amazing evening on Friday 8 December for all our Year 6 students and families. Our end of Junior School celebration for these students was an opportunity for staff, students and the school community to say ‘Thank You’ for their contributions to Ormiston over many years. A special mention must go to three students who have been at Ormiston since Early Learning. These three students have spent 8 to 9 years of their life at Ormiston which is very significant. These students are:
> Ella Hiramatsu
> Alexandra Strong
> Olivia Petrakis
I would like to sincerely thank Senior School Vice-Captain Meagan Kollmorgen for her inspiring and heartening speech on the evening. Our Year 6 students are very fortunate to have such a positive role model at Camberwell Girls Grammar School and beyond. Additionally, I would like to thank our Year 6 Class Teachers Craig Goodwin and Katrina Cheong for all their work in preparing the official Ceremony and supper activities. There is so much work that goes into this evening and I appreciate all of their efforts to ensure the evening went very smoothly.
After the Ceremony, the Year 6 students and families were invited to Robinson Hall at Senior School to have supper with Junior School staff and the school community. Once again this part of the evening went very well and I would like to thank Pinwheel & Co for their delicious food and Susannah Jepson for organising a group of Year 5 parents to assist throughout the evening. The Year 5 parents were a tremendous help in making the evening successful and I thank them for all their assistance with the food, drink and cleaning up at the end of the night.
Mountfield Maestros – Speech and Drama
This week a large group of Foundation – Year 6 students were involved in an after school Speech and Drama concert on Tuesday. The students devised and performed a range of very entertaining performances within a small or large group. I would like to thank Cara Whitehouse for all her work this year with the students. During the concert, the families who attended were reminded that Cara Whitehouse would be leaving Camberwell Girls Grammar School at the end of the year to pursue her acting career in Canada. It was a great opportunity for Cara to let everyone know what she was doing in the future. Additionally, it was announced that Kath Buckingham will be the new Speech and Drama teacher. She will take all students both from Ormiston and Senior School in 2018.
EL3 – Year 6 Christmas Gift Giving Service
As part of our Service Learning program at Ormiston, all our Early Learning to Year 6 students were involved in our annual Christmas Gift Giving Service this Wednesday. Each class was encouraged to bring to school a gift for a baby, young child or teenager for Christmas. Rev Helen Creed coordinated the service and the school community had the opportunity to sing a range of Christmas carols and to learn more about the need for helping others at Christmas time. Thank you to all the students and families that placed a gift under our Ormiston Christmas tree in the Junior School Hall. Your help in making Christmas a much better time for families that struggle at this time of the year.
Early Learning 3 and 4 Transition Workshops
Transitions are times when children move between and adapt to different spaces or places and with different people, experiences, expectations and routines. (EYLF, p. 16). In Early Learning, transition to school is not just something that happens on the first day of EL 3 or 4, it’s a process that happens over time and usually begins in Term 4 with an information evening for families and an afternoon school visit for children.
At Camberwell Girls Grammar, we understand the importance of being sensitive and supportive to children and their families as they transition from their home to a school environment. In Early Learning, we implement some important but practical things to ensure that each child and family will not only manage and cope with these adaptations and changes, but will flourish, develop their resilience and experience a sense of belonging and community.
Last week, the children that will be attending Early Learning 3 and 4 in 2018 had an opportunity to spend time in their EL classroom with their teacher and other members of the class. This initial visit allowed the children to meet and begin to develop a relationship with their classroom teacher and other children in their class and to begin to feel safe and secure in the new environment. It was wonderful to see the children enthusiastic about beginning in EL, curious to explore different aspects of the classroom and eager to engage with paints, puzzles, construction materials and creative and imaginative play experiences. The families were also eager to engage in conversation with teachers about their child’s prior experiences, strengths and interests and comfortable enough to ask questions about the curriculum and the CGGS community.
There was also time for teachers to begin to build a partnership with families and engage in dialogue with them about how their child could be supported, as an individual, through the transition process. At CGGS, our transition process is collaborative and consultative with families to ensure the needs of each child are met.
As teachers, we look forward to welcoming the new EL 3 and 4 children and their families to our EL and wider school community; and developing partnerships with families so we can work together to ensure further growth and development in their child. ~ Angela Follacchio Early Learning Team Leader
Year 5 – Zart Art Gallery
At this late stage of the year, our Year 5 students are still providing many examples of high quality student work in Art. A group of students have been asked to present their Giant Chair paintings on display at the Zart Art Student Gallery. The opening was on Thursday 7th December at 4:30pm. All parents are welcome to attend the opening or drop in any time before Christmas and also in Term 1 2018. If parents would like to attend the display, the address of Zart Art is 41 Lexton Road, Box Hill North. ~ Fiona Gibson Junior School Art Teacher
Fiona Zhu 5R and Nancy Ma 5B will be competing in The 72nd Australian Dancesport Championships at Hisense Arena from 8th – 10th December. Both girls will be dancing in Latin, Ballroom and New Vogue events in the Recreational Juvenile Girl Standard. They will also complete in the Couples events, Fiona in the Recreational Junior Couples and Nancy in the Recreational Juvenile Couples. We wish them the best of luck as they compete for the 2017 Australian titles this weekend. ~ Liz Ruffles, Year 5 Class Teacher
I wish our Ormiston families a safe and restful Christmas and New Year and may this festive season be filled with love, joy, peace and happiness for all.
