Dear Parents and Guardians,

At Camberwell Girls, we often speak about the importance of a holistic education; one that nurtures the mind, body and spirit, and supports each student to discover her strengths, interests and capabilities. Sport and Physical Education (PE) are central to this vision. They are not simply additional activities that sit alongside the academic program, but powerful learning experiences that help our students build confidence, connection, resilience and a lifelong appreciation of health and wellbeing.

Our sport and PE programs provide opportunities for every student to participate, to try something new and to experience the satisfaction that comes from effort, persistence and improvement. Whether a student is representing the School in GSV competition, participating in House sport, learning new movement skills in PE, swimming with CGGS Aquatics, playing Saturday Netball, or simply enjoying being active with friends, each experience contributes to her development in meaningful ways.

The physical benefits of regular activity are well understood. Sport and PE support strength, fitness, coordination and healthy habits that can continue well beyond the school years. Just as importantly, they also contribute to mental and social wellbeing. Through physical activity, students learn to manage challenge, respond to setbacks, celebrate progress, manage time and understand the value of balance in busy lives.

Sport also gives students a practical context in which to develop the capabilities they will draw upon throughout life. Teamwork, communication, leadership, decision-making, courage, organisation and perseverance are all strengthened through training, competition and shared endeavour. These skills are often developed quietly: in the encouragement offered to a teammate, in the discipline of turning up to training, in the willingness to play a new position, or in the courage to have another go after a disappointment.

This is particularly important in an all-girls environment. When girls are supported to participate fully, without hesitation or self-consciousness, they see themselves as capable, strong and active contributors. They learn that physical confidence is not limited to elite performance; it belongs to every student who is willing to engage, improve and contribute. In this way, sport and PE become a source of belonging, agency and joy.

The development of our Sports program has been a strategic priority for Camberwell Girls over recent years.  It was wonderful to see this reflected at our Celebration of Sport Evening for our Secondary School a couple of weeks ago.  We will also have the opportunity to recognise this early in Term 4 for our Junior School students.

I would like to acknowledge some of our significant Sport successes this year.

In Secondary School:

  • Clean sweep at the GSV Championship Athletics Carnival winning Junior, Intermediate and Senior Division 3 competition
  • Division 1 qualification for Swimming and Diving
  • 676 students have participated in GSV Weekly Sport to date this year
  • 199 students represented the school in GSV Carnivals this year
  • 7 Zone Winners
  • 14 Premiers
  • 3 Runners Up
  • Badminton Development Program – 26 students
  • Snowsports – 7 students
  • Saturday Netball – 80 students
    • 2 Premiers
    • 21 Umpires with 5 certified and 16 completing their training
      • 5 umpires involved in the Grand Finals

In Junior School:

  • 14 students attended the Balwyn North District Swimming Carnival and 7 progressed to compete at Division
  • 4 students placed in the Top 10 at the District Cross County, progressing onto Division
  • At the recent District Athletics Carnival, 31 students represented the School in Track and Field events with 8 moving to Division
  • Swimming program continues to grow with 20 students attending squad training
  • Diving program is growing with 16 students
  • Development of the Years 2-6 Netball Program
  • Run Club is growing with a regular cohort of about 15 students and they run on average 3km each week

As parents and educators, one of the greatest gifts we can offer young people is the opportunity to build habits and dispositions that will sustain them into adulthood. Sport and Physical Education help students understand their bodies, trust their capabilities, work with others and approach challenge with courage. These lessons extend far beyond the field, pool, court or gym.  These experiences assist our students to continue to grow as confident, connected and capable young people.

With best wishes,
