Commencement Ceremony a Success

Commencement Ceremony a Success

We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our Centenary year. On Tuesday 11 February, the actual day Camberwell Girls Grammar School turned 100, over 1,100 students, staff, parents, old grammarians and special guests came together on the oval for our 2020 Commencement Ceremony.

It was a privilege to welcome The Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency, The Honourable Linda Dessau and her husband, Mr Anthony Howard as our special guests. In her address, The Governor reminded those in attendance of the importance of building connected communities, living by strong values, contributing to the community and of course, how lucky all students – past and present are to have the privilege of a CGGS education.

Murrundindi, Ngurungaeta of the Wurundjeri people conducted a Welcome to Country, including traditional smoking ceremony and a number of staff and students from both the Junior and Senior Schools shared a short history, including a re-enactment of the first day of school at this site – Torrington House in 1927.

The Right Reverend, Genieve Blackwell, Bishop of the Eastern Region offered a blessing and former student, Millie Leaver and current Year 11 student, Zara Price lead the singing of Happy Birthday.

Post service, all students and staff enjoyed a birthday cupcake, while the offical party and special guests moved to Robinson Hall for refreshments and to take in the 100 year CGGS Archive Museum.

Whilst much has changed over the last 100 years, it is evident that three elements that are the essence of the school have stayed the same. Firstly, CGGS always has been and always will be a caring and welcoming community. Secondly, the school has always had a commitment to academic excellence and fostering a love for learning. Thirdly, for 100 years, CGGS has had an ongoing and strong commitment to service.

We are truly looking forward to all that is set to take place in this milestone year for Camberwell Girls Grammar School.

Staff Service at St Mark’s

It was an absolute delight to commence the 2020 year with a staff service in the St Mark’s Church Hall – the very place the school was formed almost 100 years ago.

Over 120 staff gathered in the Hall for a service, led by School Chaplain, Rev Helen Creed.

The Vicar of St Mark’s, The Venerable Greg Allinson provided a thought-provoking reflection about heroes.

A perfect start to a very special year for all Camberwell Girls Grammar School.

Former School Captains Reunite

Former Captains Reunite at Dinner Party

In preparation for our Centenary celebrations, the school was delighted to host a special dinner in September to thank and honour the leaders of CGGS – the women who have been School Captains throughout the school’s history.

Over 80 former students, ranging from the 1940s right through to the 2020 School Captains, all gathered in Robinson Hall to celebrate leadership and to reconnect.

A wonderful evening, this event provided a small taste of how next year’s celebrations will roll out and we have to admit, we are excited to have the opportunity to be bringing the CGGS community together in 2020.
