The renewal of Barbara Sutton Hall is a purposeful act of acknowledgement and respect for the past, both recent and ancient.
Built in 1988, Barbara Sutton Hall has been a cornerstone of our community for over 35 years. Thanks to the incredible success of our recent Giving Day and careful financial planning, we are excited to embark on this multi-million dollar transformation, which aligns with our broader strategic plan for the future of Camberwell Girls.
Our goal is to reimagine this cherished hall into a state-of-the-art theatre and event space, offering top-tier facilities and enhanced acoustics that will elevate the quality of our educational experiences. Construction is set to begin in mid-2025, with completion expected by early 2026, creating a vibrant and inclusive space for our students, staff, and community for generations to come.
The reimagined Barbara Sutton Hall will give expression to the stories of the past, blended with those of the present to deliver a visually striking, inclusive and creative environment well into the future.
Barbara Sutton Hall’s renewal acknowledges both recent and ancient stories, blending the past with the present to create a space for the future. A refashioned and extended entrance, framed by soft clay bricks, connects to the land’s history and the Wurundjeri people’s custodianship. This welcoming space reflects a bold vision for Camberwell Girls while respecting the building’s original structure.
The reimagined foyer is an inviting space where creativity meets tradition. The glazed, south-facing entrance serves as a dramatic statement piece, welcoming the Camberwell Girls community. With materials that reference the land and embrace its history, the foyer embodies inclusivity, fostering a vibrant environment for the future.
With new technology and enhanced environmental performance, the renewed Barbara Sutton Hall offers dynamic spaces that support our rich performing arts programs while providing flexibility for a variety of educational experiences and community gatherings. The space is designed to foster creativity and collaboration, serving as a versatile hub for learning and connection.
The auditorium is the heart of Barbara Sutton Hall’s transformation. With improved acoustics and sustainable design, it respects the environmental footprint of the original building while embracing new technologies. Timber textures and natural materials create a nurturing space for performances, blending tradition with limitless possibilities for student expression.
We acknowledge and pay respect to the Wurundjeri people as the traditional custodians of the land on which the school is situated.
